Got milk?

well apparently I don't. I am one of those people who is completely pro breastfeeding as long as possible, my mom did it with all of her kids and I think it is a great start to having a healthy child. BUT recently I have noticed that my supply is decreasing. So I called my mom the day after her and my dad left, absolutely bawling because I felt I was starving my baby (I have also noticed that I cry... A LOT) my mom called my aunt Nikki (who is also extremely pro breastfeeding) and found some suggestions for me to try. So here is the verdict:
1. I am probably not eating enough. I have never been a big eater, and although I am not purposely trying to lose weight, I have already lost most of my baby weight just because I cut down on what I eat out of habit. I didn't even think that I needed to be eating the same amount now as I was when I was pregnant to sustain both of our needs.
2. Jaxton might not be eating frequently enough. So I constantly have to push him to eat more and more. I have to thump his little cheek to wake him up.
3. I know you are supposed to rotate sides, and I do the best I can... but Jaxton HATES the left side. He acts like he can't figure out what to do, even though I know he can. He gets all fussy until I calm him down and then he latches right on as if he is saying "Gosh mom, this is all I wanted the entire time!"

My supply has been increasing since I have been working with these different suggestions, and I feel a little better. Although, I am probably not ready to hear the "when I was nursing" stories... It is still really hard on me to know that I wasn't doing what I needed to be doing as his mom and his only life support.

On a happier note, the weekend after Jax was born, my brother and his family braved the weather to come meet him and my sister took these pictures... they really have been our biggest supporters since having Jax. Thanks Sheena... i love you guys!

  1. Hey, so my milk supply started decreasing as well. I talked to a lactation specialist and one thing she said was to pump for 10 minutes after James ate, even if nothing came out. Just the stimulation made my body realize that I needed to produce more milk. that helped a lot, I even still do it every now and then just so it won't decrease anymore. He also preferred one side over the other and then I realized it was actually his side he preferred to lay on, so I held him football style to feed on the right side, and the normal way to feed on the left. He ate much better that way. And to the eating thing... you're supposed to consume 500 more calories a day than normal when you're breast feeding!

  2. It is always a struggle to learn to breastfeed. Don't be too hard on yourself!

  3. For some odd reason, oatmeal is supposed to help enhance breastmilk. Another reason he may not like eating on one side is because the other breast might be producing more. I know Nikki recommended eating more, and I would recommed to also try and get more sleep. Oh, and thanks for the shout out. We love you too!
